This photo collage is a compilation of a few of my photos and is a representation of many hawk species that commonly migrate along mountain ridges. All the species represented here have been seen along the Kittatinny Ridge, mountains that run from New York, through the northwestern corner of New Jersey, and south through Pennsylvania in the United States. Many hawk species "ride the ridge" on wind updrafts as a means of migrating from nesting or summer grounds to more temperate wintering grounds. The Broadwing Hawk is an opportunist, riding ridge updrafts as well as thermals of warm air to facilitate its trek to South America for the winter. They don't necessarily depend on a ridge updraft for migration. Close to eighty percent of the photos were taken from a ridge top on the Kittatinny Ridge, hence the distance between the camera and the subject sometimes results in resolution loss.
